Dental Practice in Afghanistan in need

A special request has been received from a dental clinic in Afghanistan: one of their dentists has become seriously ill and will need to leave the country. The clinic serves a large number of people and provides a valuable, compassionate service.

Short-term Mission Opportunity

An opportunity has arisen for a Christian Dentist to join a mission trip to Sierra Leone in April. Details below:

Dear Sir,

I was directed to your organisation by the dentist and doctor on the Logos Hope as I work with OM Ships. I am also involved with Sent Ministries in Sierra Leone and from 22nd April to May 7th will be taking a team into Freetown. Once there the team will split in two with one group working at the School in Hastings and the other going to a place called Kamakumba in the North East. I have yet to meet another organisation that has been into Kamakumba so it will be a ground breaking exercise.

Sent Ministries are already active in the town and have asked us to assist because of the unmet medical needs. We have a nurse with tropical medicine skills and initially plan to make an assessment but while we have made the journey want to provide as much help as possible. This will include simple measures such as supplying water filters, and basic preventative care. We are trying to get permission for vaccine and worming also. Just to clarify SENT Ministries is a local Sierra Leone Mission registered with the government it is not related to SENT Ministries in the USA. Is there any chance a dentist might be able to come along with us and carry out treatment? Most of the team will be from Hythe Cornerstone Church.

CDF Annual Family Conference 2011

The CDF Annual Family Conference Staying the Course was held at Hothorpe Hall in Leicestershire, 30th September to 2nd October 2011. Our speakers were:

Christian Relief Uganda

Christian Relief Uganda is a charity aiming to demonstrate Jesus’ love by providing opportunity and hope for the poorest in Uganda, empowering them to become self-sufficient.

Dental hygienist Barbara Koffman has been organising dental missions offering pain-relief clinics in rural areas since 2004. She takes out dental and non-dental teams twice each year and is always delighted to have new volunteers. As Barbara is a member of Dentaid’s Action Group on Infant Oral Mutilation (IOM), she is at the forefront of innovative educational programmes to combat this pernicious practice and in March 2010 is planning to take not only a clinical team but an oral health education group to teach the local people about dental health and also the dangers of IOM. All volunteers will be trained to offer IOM talks, Oral Health Education, basic hand washing recommendations and advice on a balanced diet.

Barbara is also looking for a Christian to accompany her on each mission as a spiritual mentor, giving help and encouragement, but without clinical or educational responsibilities.
